Alma's Town House

CreteChania and the North-West › Chania Old Town

A charming and quirky house set in the heart of Chania's old town, within easy walking distance of all the town's attractions and amenities.

Tucked away in the labyrinth of narrow alleyways that make up Chania's picturesque Splantzia district, this restored little town house offer charming and quirky accommodation for couples of small families who wish to fully immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of what is widely regarded as Crete's most appealing town. All of Chania's attractions, including the beautiful Venetian harbour front, are within easy walking distance, but in spite of being so central this remains very much a residential area, where you can spend your holidays amidst the local population. As the name suggests, the house belongs to our friend Alma, whose holiday villas on the Akrotiri Peninsula we have featured in our programme for many years, and we are delighted that she has decided to make her town house available to Cachet Travel guests.

From the front door, you enter into an entrance hall with stairs on your left leading to the upper floor. Straight ahead is the shower room whilst to the right a door leads into the main bedroom, with a double bed, air-conditioning and ample wardrobe space. At the top of the stairs is an open landing which serves as the kitchen and breakfast area. Although quite compact, the kitchen is fully equipped, with a large fridge-freezer, a full-size oven, a 4-ring electric hob and a dishwasher, as well as a kettle, a toaster, a coffeemaker and all the necessary utensils. From this area, doors lead to a smaller bedroom with a single bed and to the air-conditioned living room with a TV and a convertible sofa. Within the single room, a steep flight up steps leads up to a small roof terrace.

Those wanting to make full use of the kitchen can stock up on fresh local produce in Chania's bustling covered market hall, which is just 200 metres away, and there are all kinds of other shops within easy walking distance. If you prefer to eat out, you are equally spoilt for choice here: a five-minute walk takes you down to the harbour front, where the string of pavement cafés, restaurants and bars are perfect for people watching, or you may prefer to seek out some of the small eateries that are hidden in the back streets. In fact, one of Chania's most popular restaurants, the Well of the Turk, is literally just around the corner from Alma's Town House.

Chania's main town beach lies a 15 to 20-minute stroll to the west from here, and there are a couple of smaller beaches slightly closer in the opposite direction. Chania's archaeological museum and several interesting churches are also close by, and the main bus station is approximately 10 minutes away on foot, making this a handy choice for anyone keen to explore the west of the island by public transport. Those considering to hire a car should bear in mind that the nearest available parking may be a bit of a walk away. In fact, please be aware that your taxi transfer will also need to drop you a short distance from the house, as the narrow lanes of this historic part of the town were very much designed for pedestrians and perhaps the occasional mule with a small cart, but certainly not with motor cars in mind!
