Blue Sea Hotel

CreteEastern Crete › Mochlos

A small family-run guesthouse in a peaceful coastal village, offering prettily furnished rooms with sea views and an enticing swimming pool

If a small, traditional village with a peaceful atmosphere, genuine Cretan hospitality and, above all, splendid sea views from your balcony are high on your list of priorities this charming little hotel should fit the bill perfectly. Standing on one of the most unspoilt stretches of the island's north coast, roughly halfway between the bustling resort of Agios Nikolaos and the harbour town of Sitia, Mochlos is a sleepy little place consisting of a small fishing harbour, a cluster of enticing tavernas serving fresh fish and authentic Cretan fare, and a scattering of local houses, holiday homes and guest houses.

Our chosen accommodation in Mochlos, the Blue Sea, stands a 5-minute walk each from the village centre, right above the shore, with uninterrupted views out to sea and along the rugged coastline. Built in 1998, Blue Sea comprises just six guestrooms, which are simply but very prettily furnished in soothing shades of blue, white and cream. Each has its own balcony with a table and chairs and the aforementioned sea views, as well as an en-suite shower room. Other in-room amenities include air-conditioning, satellite TV (limited English-language channels), a hairdryer, a fridge and free WiFi. Maid service is provided every three days.

Accommodation at Blue Sea is on a room-only basis, with the option to pay locally for the breakfast that is freshly prepared by your friendly hosts in the morning. The family's pride and joy is the lovely sea-water swimming pool that they have built between the building and the sea, with its roman steps and small palm island. Surrounded by a stone-flagged terrace with plenty of sun-loungers and served by a handy pool-bar, this is the ideal spot for whiling away sunny days in blissful, undisturbed idleness. Whilst the coastline in front of the hotel is rocky, there are a couple of small sand-and-shingle bays within a 10-minute stroll from the hotel for those who prefer to swim in the sea.

Whilst Blue Sea's peaceful setting is ideal for those who primarily seek complete rest and relaxation, using the hire car that is included in your holiday here, it also makes a suitable base from which to explore some of the lesser-known Minoan sites of eastern Crete as well as some excellent terrain for walking such as the Richtis Gorge. For a change of pace, the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra are just over 20 miles away in different directions, each having its own distinct atmosphere for a variety of days out.
