Simple self-catering studios and apartments in the island capital Chora, close to the old Venetian castle

Situated in the centre of Kythira's charming island capital, Chora, Castello stands in a small but pretty garden tucked away between the churches of Estavromenos and Agia Anna. Attractively designed in traditional Greek style, with gleaming white walls and blue shutters and woodwork, the building comprises eight rooms, studios and apartments. Most of these open onto one of the terraces facing the gardens and the village. Some of the higher-floor terraces boast views up towards the nearby hilltop castle from which the property takes its name, but please note that we cannot confirm any particular room allocation.

The studios offer very simple accommodation but are equipped with the essentials such as air-conditioning, TV (local channels only) and hairdryers, as well as a basic en-suite shower room and a small open-plan kitchenette with a fridge and two-ring hob. The apartment has a separate bedroom and a living room with two sofa-beds so this can sleep up to four people. WiFi is available free of charge.

In the narrow streets that make up the village of Chora, you will find a couple of enticing tavernas, little cafés and a few quirky shops, and the nearest mini-market for essential purchases is just around the corner. The imposing hilltop castle is just the shortest of strolls from the studios, and the archaeological museum is less than ten minutes' walk away. For those planning to hire a car for part of their holiday, there is a large, free car park on the edge of the village, approximately five minutes' walk from Castello. By car, it is just a 5-minute drive to Kapsali with its lovely beach, seafront tavernas and fishing harbour whilst on foot it takes around half-an-hour, although the walk back uphill is probably enough to burn off any seafront lunch you may have indulged in.
