CreteThe Rethymnon Area › Rethymnon Old Town

Two charming studios and a larger apartment quietly tucked away in Rethymnon's atmospheric Old Town, close to local restaurants and sights and within walking distance of the sandy beach.

Tucked away in a side street in Rethymnon's Old Town, this charming property is ideal for travellers who wish to be within walking distance of a sandy beach and an excellent range of restaurants and other facilities, but who prefer to stay in authentic surroundings amongst local people rather that surrounded by other holidaymakers in a purpose-built resort complex. Rethymnon is Crete's third-largest town and whilst the long sandy beach that stretches eastwards from the town centre has naturally attracted its share of holiday hotels and associated tourist facilities, the original town retains its true Cretan character. Rethymnon thrived during the Venetian era, when its 16th-century fortress was built, and the graceful architecture of that age can still be seen in the handsome buildings that line the bustling harbour, which nowadays contain an enticing array of restaurants, bars and cafés.

The Lemon Tree House stands just 800 metres from the start of the long beach and barely five minutes' walk from the old harbour, the fortress, and Archaeological Museum and the Folklore Museum, so the location could hardly be more convenient. Nevertheless, set in a narrow residential street, it feels pleasantly removed from the bustle of the town centre, although the nearest small neighbourhood taverna is just diagonally across the lane. Completely renovated to a high standard, the house is divided into three separate dwellings, with two charming ground-floor studios that are perfect for couples and a spacious 3-bedroom apartments for families or friends on the upper floor.

The two studios are accessed directly from a pretty courtyard garden, and each has a terrace area with patio furniture. Inside, they retain some charming traditional features including partially exposed stone-walls and the fixtures and furnishings have been chosen to create a warm and homely feel. Each has a wide archway between the sleeping area with a double bed and the sitting area with a sofa, dining table and chairs, as well as a simple open-plan kitchenette with a fridge, a two-ring hob, a kettle and a toaster (with such a wide choice of restaurants close by, most guests are unlikely to want to use their kitchenettes to prepare anything more elaborate than breakfast or simple snacks). Air-conditioning and WiFi are provided free of charge, and each studio has a modern shower room.

The larger upper-floor apartment has a separate entrance and boasts three bedrooms, each with a double bed, and two shower rooms. The spacious living area has a comfortable sofa and a dining table and the open-plan kitchen has a four-ring hob, fridge-freezer and a dishwasher. All rooms have individual air-conditioning units and free WiFi is available throughout. A long, narrow balcony completes the accommodation.

Please note that there is no access by car to the narrow street in which the Lemon Tree House is situated, so your transfer will need to drop you a short walk from the property. Guests planning to hire a car should also bear in mind that parking in the surrounding streets can be limited, but part of the joy of staying here is that the town's attractions can easily be reached on foot, whilst those planning to explore further afield can make good use of the local buses.
