CreteEastern Crete › Xerokampos

Four stylish and comfortable split-level apartments in a remote seaside village with several lovely sandy beaches and a decent choice of tavernas

For a thoroughly relaxing beach holiday with a real away-from-it all feel, it would be hard to beat Xerokampos, a sleepy hamlet in Crete's extreme south-east corner. The prime attraction of this area are some of the island's loveliest coves, where pale soft sand shelves gently into clear, turquoise waters that visitors often compare to the Caribbean. Due to the remote location - over three hours' drive from the main airport at Heraklion and a fair distance along winding country roads from any of the main resorts or population centres - these beaches remain wonderfully unspoilt and uncrowded, with just a few small guest houses and apartment buildings to welcome those who are not deterred by the lengthy journey to get here.

Some years ago, the only accommodation available in such unspoilt settings used to be simple studios, but these days you do not need to sacrifice comfort or style to get off the beaten track. Situated approximately 400 metres from the nearest beach, Lithos Houses were designed to reflect the region's traditional architecture and built from natural stone and wood, giving them the warm and homely feel that is often lacking in modern holiday apartments. Carefully chosen antique furnishings and tasteful decorative touches further enhance the charm of the interiors, but the level of comfort is perfectly up to date, for the friendly and welcoming owners, Eleni and Kostas, have paid great attention to detail to ensure that their guests feel right at home.

Each of the four split-level apartments has a spacious living-dining room with afireplace and a shower room downstairs, with wooden stairs leading to a double bedroom on a partially open gallery. Some of the apartments have an additional single bed upstairs, and all have a sofa-bed downstairs. The open-plan kitchens are fully equipped with fridge-freezers, ovens, hobs, microwaves, kettles, toasters and coffee-makers. Air-conditioning, satellite TV, CD players, free WiFi and hairdryers are also provided in each apartment. Each also has its own balcony or terrace, and there is a barbecue area in the communal gardens.

As you really need your own transport to reach Xerokampos, we have naturally included a hire car in your holiday here. However, although the village is fairly spread out with no specific village centre, it is completely self-contained, with a couple of mini-markets and a handful of appealing traditional tavernas scattered amidst the olive groves and fields, so those simply seeking a lazy seaside holiday needn't really worry about driving once they have got here, as all the essentials are within walking distance. On the other car, the hire car will come in handy should you occasionally wish to explore some of the other attractions of Eastern Crete, such as the Minoan site and the gorge at Zakros, the Toplou Monastery or the larger towns of Sitia and Ierapetra. Closer to home there is also some lovely terrain for walking, and another way to explore the surrounding area is by using the bicycles that Eleni and Kostas offer to guests free of charge (subject to availability).
