A traditional village house, set in a walled garden with its own private pool, within walking distance of the centre of this authentic Cretan small town.

If you desire a traditional house full of charm and character, with a modern level of comfort and the luxury of a swimming pool, you may well have browsed in vain through holiday brochures. If you also wish to be away from other tourists, yet able to stroll to a selection of cafés and shops, you will probably have concluded that this is simply too much to ask for. Imagine our delight, therefore, when we discovered a house that offers all this and more.

Archondiko Spiti - 'The Handsome House' - stands in a quiet side street just a couple of minutes' walk from the centre of a small Cretan town. Neapolis sits in a valley surrounded by the foothills of the Dikti Mountains, between the coastal plains of the central north and the stunning Gulf of Mirabello, whose beaches and resorts are a short drive away.

The single storey house has an almost neo-classical appearance with a host of charming original features in gracefully proportioned rooms, which include a spacious living-dining room, three bedrooms (a double, a twin and one with two divan beds, which can also be used as an additional living room), two bathrooms (one with bath, the other with a shower) and a well equipped kitchen with modern appliances. The fittings and furnishings are of a high standard throughout, and every room is air-conditioned.

To the rear of the house the swimming pool is set in a walled and paved garden - an oasis that belies the house's conveniently central location. Citrus trees provide shelter from the sun, and a degree of privacy from neighbouring properties. There even the old olive press and the traditional bread oven/barbecue in one corner is perfect for preparing al fresco meals at home, rather than visiting one of the local eateries.

Whilst it would be tempting to spend all your time relaxing in the garden, there is plenty to explore in the surrounding area. There is a good bus service from the village, which make visits to the resort of Agios Nikolaos and the island of Spinalonga and to the sites of Knossos and Malia very easy to accomplish. If you do choose to hire a car, the house has its own private parking and you can reach Agios Nikolaos in just ten minutes in addtion to investigating the many villages and lesser-known archaeological treasures that lie close by.
