This 120-year old farmhouse, which was lovingly restored around the turn of the millennium, stands in a peaceful and scenic location in the north-west of the island, at an altitude of approximately 750 metres, where almond groves and other farmland start to give way to extensive pine forests. Thanks to this elevated setting, it boasts panoramic views down to the Atlantic Ocean from the paved terrace that surrounds the kidney-shaped swimming pool. Next to the pool area, there is a covered terrace with a built-in barbecue and a dining table and chairs, perfect for al-fresco lunches, and the well-tended gardens provide several pretty spots in which to relax.

The interiors are just as appealing as the gardens. You enter directly into the living-dining area, which has a beautiful pitched wooden ceiling. To one side of this is the open-plan kitchen with a breakfast bar, fridge-freezer, four-ring hob, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker and washing machine. There are two prettily decorated bedrooms; the master bedroom has double bed, built-in wardrobes and satellite TV (limited English-language channels) whilst the smaller room has twin beds. The shower room is located between the two bedrooms and is fully enclosed, but please note that the bedroom walls are open at the top towards the pitched ceiling, so from a privacy/noise separation point of view, the house is perhaps not best suited to two couples travelling together. In the centre of the house is an air-conditioning unit that can also be used as heating in the cooler months. WiFi is available free of charge, but a small local charge is made for the use of the safety deposit box.

Its setting on the edge of the pine forests and close to some excellent hiking routes makes Casa Arriba an ideal choice for keen walkers (a half-hour walk for instance, will take you to the viewpoint Mirador del Time), but it will also suit those simply wishing to relax in unspoilt surroundings. Due to the house's altitude, it can often be a little cooler up here than down on the coast, but it takes just 15 minutes or so to drive to Puerto de Tazacorte, which enjoys one of the warmest and sunniest microclimates on the island. Here you will find a selection of shops and seafront restaurants, as well as a harbour and a black volcanic beach. The nearest bakery and small supermarket re less than 10 minutes' drive away in the hamlet of La Punta, which also has a couple of simple tapas bars, whilst the centre of the rural village of Tirajafe is approximately 15 minutes by car and has another couple of eateries as well as a bank and a slightly larger supermarket.
