A comfortable villa with its own small heated pool, in a rural setting overlooking the island's unspoilt west coast

Individual villas with their own pools (as opposed to those that form part of a larger complex) are still frustratingly hard to come by on Fuerteventura, so we consider ourselves privileged to be able to offer our clients this lovely property, situated in one of the most unspoilt parts of the island. Villa San Luis stands close to Fuerteventura's wild west coast, just north of the island's narrowest part, so that is takes just 20 minutes to drive to the beach resort of Costa Calma on the south coast. But with just a few private homes as neighbours, and breathtaking views of rugged volcanic mountains and the untamed ocean, the villa's surroundings couldn't feel further removed from the popular tourist resorts of the south.

Thanks to its fairly minimalist design and the liberal use of natural materials, the villa fits well into its dramatic surroundings. Inside, a selection of rugs and a few well-chosen paintings add splashes of colour to the whitewashed walls and smart wooden floors. Large windows let in plenty of daylight and allow the views to become the main focus. Villa San Luis has two bedrooms, each with a double bed and its own shower room, making it ideal for two couples travelling together. There is also a separate cloakroom. In addition, there is a spacious living-dining room with satellite TV (limited English-language channels) and an open plan kitchen with a ceramic hob, microwave oven, dishwasher and refrigerator.

Outside, the small private swimming pool can be heated in winter and is surrounded by a terrace with wooden decking. Part of the terrace is sheltered by a lava stone wall and covered by a wooden pergola, and there is a barbecue and outside furniture for dining al-fresco.

The closest beach, Playa de Ugán, is approximately 600 metres away and is of black volcanic sand. The nearest settlement of any size is the small resort of La Pared, approximately 5 km away, which has two restaurants, a mini-market and a wind-surf school. On the way to La Pared, you will pass a German-run horse-riding centre, and whilst the local terrain may not be suited to first time riders, those with at least limited experience can enjoy exploring the rolling volcanic hills and unspoilt shoreline on horseback. Whilst the area's virgin beaches are perfect for riding or strolling along, it should be noted that swimming here can be dangerous due to strong waves and treacherous currents, so you are advised to exercise extreme caution. Alternatively you can use your hire car to occasionally visit the more sheltered beaches around Costa Calma, where you will also find a much wider range of shops and restaurants, before returning to the tranquil cocoon of this rural retreat.
