Avlemonas is often referred to by locals as "the beauty of Kythira", and it is not hard to see why. This picturesque village is clustered around two narrow, almost fjord-like coves, which offer wonderfully calm conditions for swimming from the rocky platforms and small pockets of sand during the daytime, and which prettily reflect the lights of the surrounding houses and tavernas in the evenings. The entrance to the bay is guarded by the remnants of an old Venetian fortress, whilst heading west from the village you can walk to a string of unspoilt beaches - first Paleopolis, a long stretch of sand and red and white pebbles, then the even more secluded beach of Limni, and further still - for those who don't mind a bit of a hike - the much photographed Kaladi.
On the way to these beaches you pass Anemes, which is peacefully situated at the western end of Avlemonas, less than five minutes' walk from the village centre and around ten from the start of Paleopolis beach. Anemes consists of two buildings set in a large garden, which between them contain twelve tastefully designed studios. Whilst these vary in terms of size, outlook and furnishings, all benefit from air-conditioning, TV, free WiFi, safety-deposit boxes, hairdryers and en-suite shower rooms, and each has a balcony or terrace with direct or lateral sea views.
Standard Studios in the rear building are furnished and decorated in traditional style and have simple kitchenette units with a fridge and a two-ring hob. The Premium Studios in the rear building are a little more spacious and have been renovated in contemporary style. The front building is of more recent construction and contains Superior and Premium Studios, as well as a split-level Luxury Studio and a particularly spacious Junior Suite.
Anemes is the creation of Mema and Pashalis, a charming couple who relocated to Kythira from Athens in pursuit of their dream, a dream that they now delight in sharing with their summer guests. As well as serving up a delicious breakfast each morning, they are always on hand to make their guests feel at home and to pass on helpful advice and tips about the island that they fell in love with.
