Scenically positioned on a crescent-shaped bay backed by dramatic mountains and olive-clad hillsides, the south-coast resort of Plakias is just large enough to sustain an excellent range of options for eating out, shopping and keeping yourself entertained both during the daytime and in the evening, yet retains the relaxed, laid-back charm that befits its out-of-the-way location. The main focus is on the beach that runs the length of the village, widening steadily as you walk from the harbour by the original part of the village towards the rocky promontory that frames its southern end, but the rugged hinterland is just as appealing.

Tucked into a quiet lane just a fairly flat 200-metre stroll from the village centre and the seafront, Cyano Boutique Hotel combines sleek contemporary design with the warm, family-led hospitality typical of southern Crete. Named after the vibrant cyan hue of the surrounding sea and sky, the hotel was built in a V-shape enclosing an enticing freshwater swimming pool and a tranquil sun terrace complete with comfortable sun loungers.

There are just 24 spacious guestrooms, which are finished to an excellent modern standard, although the exact design may vary from the photographs shown, as they are all individually furnished and decorated. Each has a balcony or terrace overlooking the central pool area, a stylish bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a well-equipped open-plan kitchenette with a fridge, cooker, electric kettle and the necessary equipment to prepare simple meals. Naturally, they are equipped with air-conditioning, cable/satellite TV, free WiFi and hairdryers.

The rooms come in four different categories: Junior Suites measure approximately 35 square metres in size and are completely open plan, whilst King Suites are 40 square metres and have a bedroom that is separated from the living/dining/kitchen area. Maisonettes are similar in size but are arranged on two levels, with a living room with open-plan kitchen and cloakroom on the ground floor and a bedroom with open-plan shower room on the upper floor. Finally, for families or others requiring more space, there are a number of 60 square-metre Suites with two bedrooms as well as a large living-dining room.

In spite of the self-catering facilities in the accommodation, a generous buffet breakfast with fresh fruit and juices, Cretan delicacies and a range of sweet and savoury options is automatically included in your stay at Cyano. A pool bar is at hand for refreshing drinks and light snacks during the day, whilst for dinner you can take your pick from the large selection of restaurants within easy walking distance.

With its wide range of traditional tavernas, atmospheric music bars and a few more sophisticated restaurants, as well as a range of shops to cater for all your holiday needs on hand, Plakias makes an ideal, self-contained base for those who do not wish to drive on holiday. When you can drag yourself away from the beach or the pool, you can explore the surrounding area of foot, perhaps hiking up to the picturesque hill village of Myrthios or along the coast to Souda, hire a bicycle or e-bike, or join one of the organised excursions or boat trips that are offered from here. On the other hand, if you enjoy exploring independently, you may prefer to take our car-inclusive option, as this stretch of coast boasts some of Crete's most beautiful and unspoilt beaches, wonderful terrain for hiking, and attractions such as the Preveli monastery and palm forest.
