Situated just west of the island's centre, at an altitude of around 500 metres above sea level, the sleepy hamlet of Avgonima makes an excellent base for keen walkers and nature lovers. This ancient settlement, dating back to the 12th century, nestles amidst pine forests and olive groves, and in the spring the surrounding countryside is awash with flowers, including many different species of orchid. A real sense of peace and tranquillity pervades in Avgonima, for whilst much of the village has been restored, many of its houses are only occupied during the summer and at weekends.

A number of these lovely old stone buildings now make up Spitakia, a collection of around a dozen studios, apartments and small cottages available for short-term holiday lets. Spread across different parts of the village, the accommodation varies considerably in terms of size, layout, outlook and décor, but each room or cottage has its own distinct charm. Some sleep three or four people whilst others are suitable for couples only, and most have some architectural quirks, from low vaulted ceilings to open sleeping galleries accessed by steep steps. A simple, open-plan kitchenette (with a small fridge and a two-ring hob) is provided in each property, as is a shower room. Most also have fireplaces and TV sets, and some have been fitted with heating for the cooler season. Air-conditioning is available in the rooms and studios but was not deemed necessary in the majority of the cottages, for these are kept naturally cool by their thick stone walls. The accommodation is divided into two categories, "standard" and "comfortable", whereby the latter may either be more spacious, better equipped or simply benefiting from particularly stunning views. If you have any specific requirements or preferences, please advise us at the time of booking so that we can request for a suitable room to be allocated.

The heart of Avgonima is the village square, where you will find Spitakia's reception building and snack bar. Here, a wholesome breakfast making use of local produce is available at a small local charge for those who prefer not to self-cater, and in the evening this is a pleasant spot to meet your fellow holiday makers, or chat over a drink with your host, George, who is a veritable mine of information, and an expert on the local flora. Subject to sufficient demand, he sometimes guides local walks, helping his guests to discover the best spots for orchids and sharing his passion for this beautiful island.

To explore further afield, a hire car is strongly recommended, but some of the top attractions that serious walkers can reach on foot from here include the stunningly sited and very atmospheric deserted hilltop fortress of Anavatos, some 5 km away, and the beautiful monastery Nea Moni. Beach-lovers will find several gloriously unspoilt beaches along the island's west coast, the closest of which - the picture-postcard bay of Elinda - is just a 10-minute drive away. However you have spent the day, it is a joy to return to Avgonima in the evening, for the two local tavernas serve traditional home cooking, and the village is considered one of the best spots on the island for watching the sunset.
